Dahlia pests #2346

Anyone that has grown dahlias will be familiar with the earwig - I always found this to be the worst pest. My old uncle from northern England used to raise the most incredible blooms in a tiny back yard about 10' x 7'(see 'The Road to Wigan Pier by George Orwell). His solution to earwigs was to put a bamboo cane the same height of and against the blooms and scrape out the central pith of the cane at least 3" deep. Then every two weeks he would dispense paraffin into the top of the cane with a dropper - and you just watched the earwigs come tumbling out in their death throws.

1. Pruning Systems
2. Time of pruning
3. The number of buds per vine
4. Climate
5. Frost in spring
6. Compact and overgrown vines

Are the houseplants suffering the winter blues? #6352

Water them with flat club soda to give them a needed boost; the carbonated beverage contains macronutrients like sulfur and potassium that promote growth.
