Pre-Pet Checklist #4901

Maybe it’s the kitten you saw at the pet shop during your holiday shopping spree.
Or perhaps it’s the puppy that tops your child’s holiday wish list. Whatever the reason, many people consider adding a pet to their list of holiday purchases.
Adopting a pet, however, should never be an impulse decision. Before adding Fifi to your family, ask yourself these questions.
- Do you have the energy for a pet? Pets, especially dogs, require exercise and active playtime.
- Is your living space suitable for a pet? If you are renting, are you allowed a pet? Do you have furniture that can stand up against chewing puppies or scratching kittens? Research the types of pets that fit well in your living space and lifestyle.
- Can you afford a pet? Routine veterinary care, food, grooming, toys and other expenses add up fast.
- Are you committed to having a pet? Some pets live well into their teens and even longer. Are prepared to care for a pet for that long?
- Are you home for at least eight hours a day? Do you have the time to feed, exercise and bond with a pet? Do you have the patience for housebreaking a pet?
- Is the whole family on board? Is the pet suitable for your children? Also, make sure your family understands that the pet is everybody’s responsibility.

Many people want cute-and-cuddly puppies and kittens. But it’s important to realize that pets can be a challenge. Consider whether an adult pet whose size, habits house-training and personality are fully developed – is a better choice for you.
